Budget cuts currently being considered in Congress will hurt older adults, according to Iris Freeman, a former board member at Trellis and founding chair of the Minnesota Elder Justice Center. Freeman’s opinion piece, published in the Star Tribune on May 2, 2025, warns that more than Social Security and Medicare are at risk.
Freeman notes that Medicaid cuts will affect nursing home residents and people with disabilities. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program is also on the chopping block, putting older adults at risk for needing to choose between “furnace or food.”
